Artist Details:George Worsley Adamson RE. was born in The Bronx New York City in 1913. His father was born in Glasgow and his mother in Wigan Lancashire having moved to N.Y. from India in 1910. After his mother's death in 1921, the family left New York for England. George was educated at the Wigan Mining and Technical College and later at the Liverpool School of Art where he studied etching and engraving under Geoffrey Wedgwood RE. Between 1946-1953 he taught illustration at the Exeter School of Art and from 1954 began to illustrate books continuing to do so until the end of his life. A fine print-maker especially in etching and aquatint he was made Associate RE in 1981 and Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter - Printmakers in 1987. Collections of his works are held in the BM; Ashmolean Museum; Imperial War Museum; New York Public Library among many others. There was a retrospective exhibition of his work at the V&A in 2012. He died in Exeter, Devon in 2005.
