Original scratchwork drawing on a prepared board c.37 x 27 cm. signed with the monogram bottom right-hand corner. This drawing was published in “The Builder” of May 16. 1919 with the title “Design for a National War Memorial and Chapel of Translation” by Mr. Reginald Hallward. Scratchwork consists of covering a board with a couple of coatings of gesso and applying black to the surface. A burin or metal tool with a sharp point is used to scratch out the drawing through the black into the white gesso beneath. This takes great skill and Hallward was a master of this medium and as far as I know, the only artist using it at the beginning of the twentieth century.
