Andre Derain
Andre Derain studied from 1898 under Eugene Carriere where he met Henri Matisse at his masters studio and studied later at the Academie Julien. He met his life long friend Vlaminck in 1899 and became an early member of the Fauve group and of the cubist movement. His early illustrations for books were mainly done with bold woodcuts but he used all mediums of the graphic arts in his later publications. He worked for many of the great French publishers of the early twentieth century including Ambroise Vollard and D.H.Kahnweiler among others.
