Artist
Christopher Nevinson
Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson attended the St.Johns Wood School of Art before going to the Slade in 1909 where he first studied under Tonks. In 1911 he visited Paris and worked there mostly at Julian’s and came under the influence of Marinetti and the Futurists. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he joined the Red Cross as an ambulance driver but was invalided home. The time spent in the war and his traumatic experiences made him renounce Futurism and its sentimental illusions about wars glory and dynamism. His etchings and drypoints depicting war which were published up to around 1916 remain his greatest and most inspired works. He exhibited with the Vortists and contributed to their journal “Blast” in the 1915 “War” number. Ref: Guichard: Provisional list of etchings. appendix 4. British Etchers. Garton 1977.
