The Marquis Franz von Bayros, erotic illustrator and print-maker was born in Agram, Croatia in 1866. Educated first in Vienna and Linz, transferred to the Munich schools 1883-87 before enrolling at the Academy in Vienna 1887-8. Studied with the painters Eugene Felix and Gottfried Seelos and later in 1897 to Munich to study at the Adolf Holzl Special School in Dachau. 1904 had his first one-man exhibition organised by the Munich art dealer, Windhager which proved successful enough to bring Bayros commissions for book illustrations, portfolios of bookplates and folios of prints. In 1911 he fled Munich after being prosecuted by the police for some of his erotic illustrations and didn’t return to Munich until 1923. He died shortly after in Vienna in 1924.
