George Buday was born in Kolozvar,Transylvania and studied in Hungary. He travelled to England in 1928-29 where he produced his first wood-engravings. Returning to Hungary he graduated with a doctorate at the university of Szeged in 1934. In the same year, he began teaching graphic arts at the Franz Joseph University. In 1936 he won the Rome Scholarship and in 1937, began living and working in London.He illustrated many books, mainly in the UK.many of which were written by himself. He was also a prolific maker of bookplates and produced separate wood-engravings in the “European” style of the expressionist school.
