Hans Thoma was born in Bernau Germany and learned lithography under Schirmer in Karlsruhe. After working in Dusseldorf, he moved to Paris to study under Gustave Courbet before going to Munich. He was a printmaker working mainly in etching and lithography and issued portfolios of prints as well as contributing to journals.
