John Buckland-Wright was born in Dunedin. New Zealand, and moved to England in 1908. Around the mid 1920’s. he embarked upon a career as an artist. He travelled in Europe and settled in Brussels where he was a founder member of Gravure Originale Belge before moving to Paris where he was associated with Stanley Hayter at the Atelier 17. He exhibited with the Surrealist Exhibition in London in 1936. He was a prolific book illustrator and worked for private presses in England and abroad using all mediums of the graphic arts. Buckland-Wright taught for many years at the Camberwell School of Art and at the Slade. He wrote a book on print-making, published by the “Studio” in 1953 entitled “Etching and Engraving” which is still relevant today.
