John Copley ARE was born in Manchester and at fifteen attended classes at the University and the School of Art in Manchester before moving to London. He studied painting at the Royal Academy Schools from c.1892 until 1897. Founder member of the Senefelder Club in 1908/9 and became its first Secretary publishing his first 31 lithographs in 1909. He published his first etchings in 1917 and by 1950 had completed some 155 works in that medium. Copley was elected President of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1948.
