John William Waterhouse

John William Waterhouse RA. was a painter of the later Pre-Raphaelite School, influenced by Rossetti and Burne-Jones and earlier by Alma Tadema. Brought up in Italy, he moved to London as a student and embarked upon a career as a painter. As usual, with most of the Pre-Raphaelite and Olympian painters of the later nineteenth century, professional engravers were employed to create prints from the artists paintings to be sold to the general public. Waterhouse only appears to have executed one original lithograph in the 1890’s. Ref: Anthony Hobson: The Art and Life of J W Waterhouse. Studio Vista/Christie’s 1980.
