Joseph Webb took up etching in around 1927 after studying at Chiswick School of art where he became a teacher of etching in 1930. Frederick Landseer Griggs was the main influence on Webb at this time and printed some of his plates at the Dover House Press when the young artist visited him at Camden in 1929. Webb’s etchings have much in common with etchers of the Goldsmiths School such as Sutherland, Drury and Tanner who shared the same interests in the work of Blake, Palmer and Calvert. He had his first one-man show at Colnaghi’s in 1933 and exhibited at the RA and was elected A.R.E in 1930. For a list of his etchings see Guichard 1977 appendix 5.
