Artist
Jules Dupre
Jules Dupre, painter and lithographer of the Barbizon school of landscape artists, was born in Nantes, France in 1811. He started out as a porcelain painter at the age of 12 before moving to Paris where he studied art under the painter Jean-Michel Diebolt. He first exhibited works at the Paris Salon in 1831 and was awarded a silver medal there two years later. In 1834 he travelled to England where he was impressed and influenced by the landscapes of Constable. He was made Officer of the Legion d’Honneur in 1848. Collections of his works are to be seen widely in museums and art galleries throughout the world. Dupre’s landscape lithographs are amongst the very finest early plein-air prints and mark the beginning of the Barbizon style.
