Leon Underwood
George Claude Leon Underwood, sculptor, painter, printmaker and teacher studied under Frank Short at the RCA. In 1921 he made a number of etchings which were exhibited at the Chenil Galleries and in January, he opened his own school in Hammersmith which came to be known as the Brook Green School. Many of his students became famous printmakers including Henry Moore, Blair Hughes Stanton, Gertrude Hermes and Eileen Agar among others. He was also a writer and illustrator of books and founder of the magazine “The Island” which was illustrated by himself and members of his school. He practised all mediums of printmaking from etching to the lino-cut and later in his career with large scale wood-cuts in colour. Ref: Christopher Neve: Leon Underwood: T&H 1974.
