Max Burchartz, German expressionist painter and print-maker, was born in Elberfeld and studied at the Dusseldorfer Akademie. Further studies in Paris and Holland and after the First World War settled in Hannover and later in Weimer. 1926-33 taught at the Folkwangschule in Essen. He published portfolios of prints and contributed graphics to various art journals and publications such as Die Schaffenden and Das Kestnerbuch. He died in Essen in 1961.
