Various artists Pochoir Prints.
The art of “Pochoir” print making (hand-colouring through stencils) was used mainly from c.1912 to c.1930 and almost exclusively in the “Art Deco” style of the period. Major exponents of this method were artists such as Barbier, Benito, Bonfils. Brissaud, Legrand, Lepape, Martin, Marty in France. Brunelleschi, Busi, Davanzo, Leone, Meschini,Tito in Italy. Paul Nash and E.McKnight-Kauffer working in England, among many other Europeans and Americans. The technique used required the stencil cutter or “decoupeur” to cut out the shapes using a straight-edge knife. These stencils were passed on to the “coloristes” who applied broad, soft opaque layers of gouache through the stencils using various brushes and methods of application onto the artists print outline on the paper. Some pochoir prints were highlighted with touches of gold and silver for effect. The production of pochoir prints was rather labour intensive having to pass through many hands to achieve the finished result and therefor an expensive system of print making.
